A Case of Huntington¢¥s Operation for Massive Defect at the Shaft of the Tibia

Abstract
The shaft of the tibia is -a long tube of heavy bone but-susceptible to external violence because the medial surface is subcutaneous throughout its extent.
Although there are various operative procedures for the tibial defect in a child, it is known that the most excellent method is transplantation of the fibula of the affected leg to bridge the defect secondary to osteomyelitis. Our patient was a 12 year-old male student. He was well until he was involved in the direct severe violence on the medial surface of his left leg about July in 1970. After then, archi-punctures in the affected leg were conducted by a herb doctor and curretage and sauceriza¡þtion were performed under the diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis at a surgical hospital.
On his admission to our hospital, he was unable to walk because of his troubled left leg. There was much pus discharging from the left leg. On roentgenographic films it was ascertained that the entire diaphyseal area of the tibia was sequestrated.
In spite of continuous conservative treatment, the disease became worse. So from July of 1971, we conducted operations three times on osteomyelitis of the left tiibia, namely diaphysectomy and two stages of Huntington¢¥s operation.
Follow-up studies showed good union of the tibia and fibula in the affected leg.
